A faster morning coffee for students at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute: set up your usual order once and link it to your student card.

Situation

Every morning students queue at the coffee machine at AMFI before class. Around deadlines and exams the queue grows, and many students walk to a coffee bar around the corner instead.

Research

I interviewed students, observed the machine at busy moments and used it myself. Most people wanted to get through the menu fast and picked the default drink. The machine grinds real beans, but the coffee bar still won on experience.

The persona, Eveline (22), studies at AMFI, works late and needs her coffee in the morning. She likes the machine and wants it to be faster.

Concept

With The Usual you save your regular drinks in an app and link them to your student card. At the machine you scan the card and your coffee starts. I set clear requirements: coffee within a minute, a confirmation for every payment, queues of two people at most and no error messages.
