Children draw a monster, AI turns the drawing into a 3D model, and a 3D printer prints it from plastic they collected.
Brief
Plastic Whale fishes plastic out of the water and turns it into boats. They wanted a concept that makes people aware of plastic waste and gets them to collect it. I focused on children, because they will live with the problem the longest.
Concept
A child draws a monster on paper and photographs it in the app, which turns the drawing into a 3D model. Once the child has collected enough plastic, a 3D printer prints the monster from it, and the child takes it to school, where classmates want one too.
AI research
The concept is set in the future, so I researched which AI could already turn 2D images into 3D. PIFuHD turns a single photo of a person into a printable 3D model, which made the idea plausible. I modelled the monster in Blender to show the result.
